Stocks/Mutual Funds

Common Stocks are shares representing ownership stake in a company. It provides voting rights, as well as entitled the shareholder to participate in the company's success or failure through dividends and capital appreciation. Stockholders have the last rights to a company's assets after other creditor and debt holders as well as preferred stockholders have been paid.

Stockholders receive one vote for every share the own, though the number of votes is not always proportionate to the number of shares owned. The board of directors represents the owners of the corporation and takes major decisions for the company. Shareholders also have voting rights on other crucial issues relating to the company.

Preemptive rights allow Stockholders to maintain their proportional ownership if and when the company issues more stocks. Which means that such Shareholders have the right but are not obliged to purchase as much new shares as it takes to maintain their proportionate ownership stake in the company.

Shares of thousands of companies are usually quoted and traded in the major exchanges around the world like the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), American Stock Exchange (AMEX), NASDAQ, etc. This instrument can also be used for long-term investing purposes. Investors are strongly advised to seek professional help before choosing stocks to invest in.
